Fire has been and continues to be an important disturbance in grassland evolution and management. WebThe total standing biomass in grasslands is also small compared with mature forests. A larger proportion of the total biomass produced by photosynthesis is transferred to plant roots in grasslands than in forests, however. In many grasslands, underground plant biomass is greater than aboveground biomass, in some cases by a factor of 5 or more.
